FIRST GRADE

Bible: Betty Lukens Through the Bible in Felt - Our Bible curriculum gives us an overview of the Bible by beginning with the story of creation, walking us through the Bible chronologically, and ending with the second coming of Christ. We use flannel graphs as well as dramatization to help make the stories come alive for the children. The students memorize an applicable Bible verse each week.

Reading: Bob Jones University Press - Our reading curriculum emphasizes phonetic principles as well as introducing sight words. The students meet with the teacher in small groups during reading instruction to maximize opportunities for individual attention and check comprehension.

Phonics & Spelling: Bob Jones University Press - Bob Jones also publishes a separate phonics program which we use to help strengthen phonetic awareness. Weekly spelling word lists are taken directly from the phonics principles learned that week. The phonics curriculum teaches punctuation and capitalization; it also offers opportunities for the students to write stories.

Handwriting: FCS Elementary utilizes the Hand Writing Without Tears program that follows students throughout elementary school. The developmental approach allows children to sing, dance, color, and build their ways into learning to write. The hands on approach are used to build a strong foundation of early literacy success.

Math: enVisions Math(Scott Foresman/Addison Wesley) - EnVisions Math incorporates manipulative tools for hands-on learning of math concepts. We move from the concrete to the more abstract as the year progresses. Nightly homework and assessments are given to ensure that students have grasped the taught concepts.

Science: Purposeful Design (ACSI) - The ACSI curriculum is used to teach our students science concepts. The students perform various experiments as they learn about life science (animals and the human body), physical science (movement and simple machines), and earth and space science.

Social Studies: ABeka - First grade students get an overview of US history, geography and maps, as well as the world around them with the aide of the ABeka social studies curriculum. They discover what makes our country beautiful and great, discuss service jobs and do basic exploration of the world.
