THIRD GRADE
3rd grade science uses Purposeful Design by ACSI. Each chapter weaves together the wonders of the created world and a Biblical worldview. 3rd grade incorportates life science, physical science, and earth and space science. Projects, tests, quizzes, and daily participation evaluates each student's understanding of the subject matter.
Spelling/vocabulary in 3rd grade uses the Great Source Spelling and Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop.In spelling, weekly word lists target phonics rules, extended wordforms, and high frequency words. Vocabulary introduces definitions, synonyms, antonyms, word usage, and the use of context clues. Weekly tests and daily writing evaluates profiency.
Third grade math is EnVision Math by Scott-Foresman. In this year, we review addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Time, measurement, and solving word problems are important concepts that are mastered. Students are eligible to compete for a position on the 3rd grade Math Olympics team.
Third grade Bible uses the ACSI Bible curriculum. We study the life of Christ and the building of His Church on earth, including the missionary work of Paul and how we can be Christ's disciples. We memorize both weekly Scriptures and longer passages throughout the year. The emphasis is on being vital Christians in the world even as youths.
Bob Jones Reading for Christian Schools in used to teach reading in the third grade. There is a emphasis on comprehension, while developing fluent, thoughtful readers through a systamatic phonetic approach to instruction. In addition to the basal reader and worktexts, we read the novels Charlotte's Web, These are My People, The Hundred Dresses, and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever to enhance a liflong love for reading.
The third grade language class uses The Bob Jones English 3 curriculum. Our goals include developing the correct use of grammar, punctuation, and study skills in our daily work. An emphasis is placed on the learning of effective and clear writing strategies which will enhance the student's ability to communicate dynamically in the world.
Third grade uses ABEKA Our American Heritage to survey American history from its beginnings to modern times through biographies of great Americans. An emphasis is placed on patriotism, character development with a Biblical worldview, and appreciation for the contributions made to our country. Tests, quizzes, role playing, and a final project evaluate the student's understanding of the subject material.
Our 3rd Grade students continue to learn the concepts of rhythm, pitch and note reading using Recorders as our primary focus. Recorders are used as a pre-band instrument allowing the students to experience fingering before moving on to more advanced band instruments. We use the "Recorder Karate" method as our curriculum which is a series of nine increasingly difficult songs that when master earn the student a "Belt". The goal is to achieve "Black Belt" before the end of the school year. These students perform at the Christmas and Grandparent's Day programs.
