In first grade
we tap into the natural curiosity of six and seven year olds by
giving them opportunities to learn by doing. First grade is the
year when most children begin reading fluently. They also
strengthen math concepts begun in Kindergarten, and they become
budding authors. Most importantly, we emphasize the joy of
becoming more like Jesus as we grow.
Our Bible
curriculum gives us an overview of the Bible by beginning with
the story of creation, walking us through the Bible
chronologically, and ending with the second coming of Christ.
We use flannel graphs as well as dramatization to help make the
stories come alive for the children. The students memorize an
applicable Bible verse each week.
Our reading
curriculum is Bob Jones, which emphasizes phonetic principles as
well as introducing sight words. The students meet with the
teacher in small groups during reading instruction to maximize
opportunities for individual attention.
Bob Jones also
publishes a separate phonics program which we use to help
strengthen phonetic awareness. Weekly spelling word lists are
taken directly from the phonics principles learned that week.
The phonics curriculum also offers many opportunities for the
students to write stories.
Our first grade
students learn to write using the D’Nealian handwriting method.
This style of manuscript allows for an easier transition to
cursive writing in second grade.
We use Saxon
Math, which incorporates many manipulative tools for hands-on
learning of math concepts. We move from the concrete to the
more abstract as the year progresses. Students are assessed
each week to ensure that they have grasped the taught concepts.
The ACSI
curriculum is used to teach our students science concepts. The
students perform various experiments as they learn about life
science (animals and the human body), physical science (movement
and simple machines), and earth and space science.
First grade
students get an overview of history, geography, and the world
around them with the aide of the ABeka social studies
curriculum.
Combine all
that with the fun of learning centers and exciting resource
classes, and you’ll see that there is a “whole lot of learning
going on” when you enter the first grade classrooms at FCS!
