2nd Grade Curriculum

Writing
and Grammar: English 2 for Christian Schools
Our English
text is published by BJU Press in Greenville, SC. This
curriculum was designed to foster an appreciation for language
as a gift from God. It helps our second graders to develop the
correct use of English grammar in written and oral communication
and teaches our children how to use the Writing Process to
create various types of compositions.

Math:
Saxon Math 2, 2nd Edition
Saxon Math
focuses on conceptual development through repetitive teaching.
Topics are revisited over several grades. Saxon 2 uses a
multisensory approach with lots of manipulatives to reach all
learners.

Handwriting: D’Nealian Handwriting Practice and Review
Workbook
Our
handwriting curriculum is published by Addison Wesley
Educational Publishers. It includes letter instruction, letter
practice, and everyday writing. Second grade also begins
cursive instruction after Christmas.

Social
Studies: Our America by Judy Hull Moore, Animated
Hero Classics video series by Living History Production
The second
grade Social Studies curriculum is published by A Beka Book
Productions. Students discover how God guided the early
Americans in the building of our country. Second graders also
learn basic geography skills, with an emphasis on learning the
location and names of the fifty states.

Spelling:
Working Words in Spelling, Book C
Our Spelling
curriculum focuses on learning high frequency word clustered by
vowel patterns. The number of words in a list increases
throughout the year. In second semester we introduce dictation
sentences in which the students use multiple high-frequency
words they have studied.

Bible:
ACSI Bible- Grade Two
Second Grade
Bible curriculum focuses on Bible characters and their positive
traits that we can emulate. They will learn about thirty-six
different traits and seventeen different Bible “heroes”.

Reading:
Reading 2 for Christian Schools by Bob Jones
University Press
Our Reading
curriculum contains selection from many different genres of
literature. Phonics is taught systematically through the use of
fictional characters that represent letters. Christian
character traits are also woven in with story comprehension.

Science:
Purposeful Design Science- Level Two by ACSI
We are
introducing a new Science curriculum this year. It covers many
topics in the Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Earth Sciences
and the Human Body as well as integrating a Biblical worldview.
