2nd Grade Curriculum

  • Writing and Grammar: English 2 for Christian Schools

Our English text is published by BJU Press in Greenville, SC.  This curriculum was designed to foster an appreciation for language as a gift from God.  It helps our second graders to develop the correct use of English grammar in written and oral communication and teaches our children how to use the Writing Process to create various types of compositions.

  • Math: Saxon Math 2, 2nd Edition

Saxon Math focuses on conceptual development through repetitive teaching.  Topics are revisited over several grades.  Saxon 2 uses a multisensory approach with lots of manipulatives to reach all learners.

  • Handwriting: D’Nealian Handwriting Practice and Review Workbook

Our handwriting curriculum is published by Addison Wesley Educational Publishers.  It includes letter instruction, letter practice, and everyday writing.  Second grade also begins cursive instruction after Christmas.

  • Social Studies: Our America by Judy Hull Moore, Animated Hero Classics video series by Living History Production

The second grade Social Studies curriculum is published by A Beka Book Productions.  Students discover how God guided the early Americans in the building of our country.  Second graders also learn basic geography skills, with an emphasis on learning the location and names of the fifty states.

  • Spelling: Working Words in Spelling, Book C

Our Spelling curriculum focuses on learning high frequency word clustered by vowel patterns.  The number of words in a list increases throughout the year.  In second semester we introduce dictation sentences in which the students use multiple high-frequency words they have studied.

  • Bible: ACSI Bible- Grade Two

Second Grade Bible curriculum focuses on Bible characters and their positive traits that we can emulate.  They will learn about thirty-six different traits and seventeen different Bible “heroes”.

  • Reading: Reading 2 for Christian Schools by Bob Jones University Press

Our Reading curriculum contains selection from many different genres of literature.  Phonics is taught systematically through the use of fictional characters that represent letters.  Christian character traits are also woven in with story comprehension.

  • Science: Purposeful Design Science- Level Two by ACSI

We are introducing a new Science curriculum this year.  It covers many topics in the Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Earth Sciences and the Human Body as well as integrating a Biblical worldview.
