PSYCHOLOGY AND CHRISTIAN LIVING
In Psychology the students learn about their personality. The second nine weeks the students learn about personality disorders; breakdowns of the sections of psychology, etc. The third nine weeks the students cover Mere Christianity and the fourth nine weeks the students cover family living and social psychology.
HIGH SCHOOL SPEECH AND DEBATE
This class provides an encouraging classroom atmosphere for students to develop skills in formal and informal speeches and debate. Competitive high school speech activities, such as humorous interpretation, impromptu, persuasive, cross examination debate, and mock trials are introduced. Students will learn to speak publicly with a heightened degree of confidence, improve memorization and research skills, and increase awareness of current events.
MEDIA PRODUCTION
This elective class will teach several different types of audio and video production. Students will learn the basics of broadcast media and produce a short television news program that will be broadcast to the school. Students will also be responsible for video recording some school events outside of class. The class will also cover how to make news/sports field reports, live broadcast techniques, documentaries, video and audio commercials and podcasts.
ADVANCED BAND (GRADES 8-12)
The Advanced Band concentrates on more advanced band literature in a variety of styles including gospel, jazz, patriotic, big band, classical and even a few marching band scores. There is a greater focus on group balance and intonation as well as personal embouchure and skill. These students perform at Fall Festival, the Christmas Concert, various chapels, Spring Concert and community events. They are invited to audition for the Southeastern District All-District Band, participate in solo/ensemble competitions and the UNC-Pembroke Honor Band as well as the FCS DrumLine and Pep Bands.
YEARBOOK
The elective class, Yearbook, is used to reveal the creative nature of God and to promote the various creative intelligences in our students. Yearbook is designed to communicate our love of Christ and our love of the Body of Christ at FCS. Much like the authors of the bible, we strive to create a publication that accurately reflects the events at FCS and to tell the “story” of each year. In this course the staff member will learn to use a variety of software to create layouts and work with deadlines to produce two publishable products.
BUSINESS
Through lecture, hands on demonstrations, guest speakers, projects, and working applications, this business class, using the Bible as the absolute standard, teaches basic life skills, money management, economics, and business applications which are essential to students graduating and entering the work force. The goal of the FCS business course is to teach students basic business, economics, and financial management skills using the Bible as the standard; applying God’s view of money, work ethic, and principles to current business applications.
HIGH SCHOOL CHORUS INCLUDES 8TH - 12TH GRADES
This class is taught to master their musical skills. Frequent performances, comeptitions and festivals require refined skills in vocal training, sight reading, harmony parts and choreography. These skills are developed as tools to praise and worship God. Evaluations are based upon vocal sectional tests, oral quizzes, memorizations, techniques and performance expectations.
WEIGHT TRAINING
Weight training is presented as a program to care for, nourish and maintain our bodies as temples of God (I Cor 6:19). Proper fitness is a type of worship and an attitude of thankfulness to the Creator. Strength training provides an avenue of teaching proper technique for using weights. This not only provides the student with a healthy body, but increases their ability to honor God with the talents He has given them on the field of play.
This course will provide the learner with the strength training techniques that will benefit them with a healthier body and increase the talent that God has given them.
CIS 110 INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS
Credit: 3 College Credits and 1 FCS Graduation Credit
This course introduces computer concepts, including fundamental functions and operations of the computer. Topics include identification of hardware components, basic computer operations, security issues, and use of software applications. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role and function of computers and use the computer to solve problems. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement general education core requirement in natural science/mathematics (Quantitative Option). This course is also available through the Virtual Learning Community (VLC).
WEB 110 INTERNET/WEB FUNDAMENTALS
Credit: 3 College Credits and 1 FCS Graduation Credit
This course introduces World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standard markup language and services of the Internet. Topics include creating web pages, search engines, FTP, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to deploy a hand-coded website created with mark-up language, and effectively use and understand the function of search engines. This course is also available through the Virtual Learning Community (VLC).
BRAIN GAME
Brain Game is an after-school voluntary activity which involves the extra study of subjects such as Science, Math, English, Literature, Arts & Crafts, History, Geography, Social Studies both in North American and around the world, and Current Events. Students on the team participate in a televised quiz on these subjects, run by WRAL, Channel 5 TV, where they compete against other High Schools in the WRAL viewing area.
