6TH GRADE LITERATURE
6th Grade Literature combines novel study and vocabulary study. The students read four novels throughout the year (about one a quarter). Each novel is taught from a Christian perspective and focuses on Biblical principles apparent in the characters and conflicts. The novels read are: Nate Saint: On a Wing and a Prayer, A Christmas Carol, The Whipping Boy, and A Father's Promise. The students also spend a portion of class each day studying vocabulary. The students are required to learn the definitions and spellings of ten vocabulary words a week. They must also apply the definitions in specific exercises.
6TH GRADE GRAMMAR AND WRITING
6th Grade Grammar and Writing focuses on two components. The first component is intensive study of the mechanics of English grammar (including parts of speech, sentence structure, punctuation, etc.) The second component covers the writing process (planning, drafting, revising, proofreading, and publishing) and various types of writing (narrative, persuasive, creative, etc.) Both components utilize the textbook English 6 Writing and Grammar, BJU Press.
7TH GRAMMAR/WRITING
Grammar and Writing reflect the image of God in His creation. We have a great capacity for language. Language skills are taught and mastered to allow students to develop a clear understanding of Basic English Grammar and Usage. Students will increase their proficiency in the use of English, both spoken and written. Grading is based on tests, quizzes, and written assignments. Also, included is homework and daily in-class assignments. Writing will be graded based on rubrics outlining what is required for each separate piece of writing.
7TH LITERATURE
Students experience literature in various forms, including: novels, poetry, short story, and non-fiction articles and books. Book reports will be required for their independent reading. Vocabulary study will be given to inhance students' understanding of the language. Evaluation will be based on tests, quizzes, book reports, creative assignments and responses to literature, homework, and journaling.
8TH GRADE GRAMMAR
This courses uses the "Bob Jones Grammar and Writing 8" curriculum. It helps students to master their grasp of grammar and sentence structure when speaking and writing. They will apply a variety of strategies to encourage and develop more proficient oral and writing skills.
8TH GRADE LITERATURE
This course begins with students learning the structure of short stories and progresses through four different novels throughout the year. The students will learn to appreciate, analyze, apply and evaluate literature from both a literary and Biblical perspective. The students will not only be reading, but will participate in dramatizations, creative art projects, and writing exercises in order to meet these goals.
